State law allows local Republican and Democratic parties to submit such lists to help ensure bipartisan staffing at the polls — and elections administrators are supposed to prioritize those people as they appoint poll workers.

On Monday, the Texas Supreme Court rejected an emergency motion from the Travis County Republican Party (TCRP) that aimed to force the Travis County Clerk to replace election officials at polling sites on Election Day after the party alleged there was an imbalance of Democrat and Republican poll workers.

The Travis GOP sued the Travis County Elections Division last week, naming Dyana Limon-Mercado in her role as the county clerk and election administrator. The Third Court of Appeals dismissed the lawsuit, and the Travis GOP appealed to the Texas Supreme Court.

Travis County Republican Party Chairman Matt Mackowiak made an urgent announcement last Tuesday, more than a week into early voting: The local GOP had sued the Travis County elections administrator, alleging that she created a “severe deficiency” in the number of Republican poll workers at the county’s 170-plus voting locations.

The Travis County Republic Party has sued over an imbalance in poll workers at local voting sites, claiming that just 24% of the county’s poll workers are Republicans.

The election code requires each polling location’s presiding judge and alternate judge to be affiliated or aligned with different political parties.
