The U.S. Senate is set to vote on Tuesday on a bill to enshrine federal protections and expand insurance coverage for fertility treatments, days after Republican former President Donald Trump surprised supporters by saying he would support such a law.

Democrats have sought to tie IVF to reproductive rights more broadly, arguing that the Supreme Court's 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade opened the door to restrictions on other procedures. Trump appointed three of the Supreme Court justices who voted to eliminate the national right to an abortion.

The Senate will vote for the second time this year on legislation to establish a nationwide right for in vitro fertilization.
