The mayor of Amsterdam has condemned what she called an "explosion of antisemitism" in the city, during which Israeli football fans came under violent attack from local rioters. Femke Halsema said youths on scooters had criss-crossed the Dutch capital on Thursday night on the hunt for Israeli supporters in a "hit-and-run".

U.S. President Biden on Friday condemned attacks on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam overnight as "despicable" and said they "echo dark moments in history when Jews persecuted." Biden said in a post on X that the United States has been in touch with Israeli and Dutch officials.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema condemned the “antisemitic hit-and-run squads” that targeted Maccabi fans, saying they were “attacked, abused and pelted with fireworks,” Reuters reported.
