It’s quite possible Democrats could gain seats there, and it’s still within the realm of possibility that they could flip the GOP-controlled chamber. It would be a consolation prize, sure. But it would be a substantial one that would give Democrats a major check on President-elect Donald Trump’s and the GOP’s grip on power.

Democrats’ path to take back control of the House of Representatives has narrowed as Republicans outperformed expectations up and down the ballot and Donald Trump retook the White House, but the outcome of dozens of races makes it too close to call as of early Wednesday morning.

The party that will control the US House of Representatives for the next two years is still in the balance. Republicans were seven seats short of the 218 seats needed to take control on Thursday morning.
