Sweden's prime minister says his government has formally asked China to cooperate in explaining the recent rupture of data cables on the Baltic Sea bed in an area where a China-flagged vessel was sighted.

Multiple countries are investigating and the authorities in Europe say they have not ruled out sabotage. But U.S. intelligence officials have assessed that the cables were not cut deliberately.

Sweden has formally asked China to co-operate with an investigation into damage to two cables in the Baltic Sea after a Chinese ship was linked to the incidents. The cables - one linking Sweden to Lithuania, the other linking Finland to Germany - were damaged in Swedish territorial waters in the Baltic Sea on 17 and 18 November.

The Russian and Chinese governments have both denied any involvement with the incident, though sources claim the damage is consistent with an intentional act of sabotage.

Western officials believe Moscow most likely orchestrated the Baltic Sea incident as part of growing efforts to cripple key maritime infrastructure.

NATO is investigating the Chinese ship suspected of deliberately damaging the undersea cables connecting some of its members.
