Cold and cough medicines containing phenylephrine may soon be removed from shelves because the ingredient doesn’t improve congestion symptoms.

The Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday its intention to remove oral phenylephrine, a common ingredient in over-the-counter cough and cold medicines, from the market.
