A lower court's order of a survey at the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid of Sambhal that triggered massive violence in which four people died and many were injured, has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

Sambhal: The Sambhal Masjid dispute has knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court after the Masjid committee filed a petition before the Top court on Thursday. The mosque committee has filed a petition challenging the survey order of the mosque issued by a lower court.

The Sambhal Jama Masjid Committee has approached the Supreme Court challenging the order passed by a trial court for the commission survey of the mosque in a suit which alleged that it was built after destroying a temple. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar will hear the matter tomorrow.

A management committee from Sambhal's Jama Masjid has petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge the order for a mosque survey after a local court's ruling. Tensions in the area have been high following clashes that resulted in casualties and injuries.

Five people were killed on Sunday, November 24, after protests over a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era mosque in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal turned violent and locals clashed with the police.
