Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired defense minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday, after Netanyahu said trust between the two officials had “eroded” in recent months following disagreements over Israel’s war in Gaza.

Netanyahu and Gallant have repeatedly been at odds over the war in Gaza. Netanyahu had avoided firing his rival until world’s attention was focused on the U.S. presidential election.

Gallant is a vicious war hawk, whose disagreements with Netanyahu are over how best to assert Zionism’s interests militarily.
