There was a time when the blue check mark was only for the likes of Twitter, but not anymore. In an apparent effort to stop fraud aimed at its drivers, Uber has announced new rider verification mechanisms which are optional—for now.

After going through a background check, verified users will have a blue checkmark on their account and may even experience priority pickup.

Uber began testing rider verification in a number of cities earlier this year and was satisfied with the results: “the majority of riders” in those pilot markets got verified, and those that were “tend to give drivers 5 stars more often,” the company said. “Riders who are verified also get fewer serious complaints from drivers.”
