South Korea’s president has accepted the resignation offer by his defense minister, as opposition parties moved to impeach both men over the stunning yet short-lived imposition of martial law that brought armed troops into Seoul streets.

The daughter of assassinated president Park Chung-hee, she was elected president herself in 2013, but was impeached and removed from office in 2017. The country's military says activities at parliament and parties are banned, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The impeachment attempt comes amid widespread protests and strikes across South Korea after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed attempt to impose martial law in the country.
