The town of McColl, South Carolina, is dealing with the sudden death of Mayor George Garner in a car crash just days after its entire police force resigned.

A sense of solemness felt throughout McColl Wednesday, as the small town grapples with the death of their mayor.George Garner was killed after crashing into an 18-wheeler while evading police on Highway 34 in Darlington County Tuesday.

Officials say the mayor was being pursued by a deputy at the time of the crash, and that pursuit was an effort to to protect his well-being.

Then on Tuesday, just before 3 p.m., Darlington coroner J. Todd Hardee said 49-year-old Garner died after a crash on Highway 34 in Mechanicsville, SC. Hardee said Garner’s vehicle crashed head-on with a truck.

Marlboro County’s sheriff said Wednesday that officers were behind McColl Mayor George Garner but not “pursuing him” when he crashed head-on into an 18-wheeler and died. Garner crashed Tuesday afternoon on Cashua Ferry Road in Darlington County.
