Premiering at the Telluride & Toronto International Film Festivals in hopes of a long awards run, The Piano Lesson is the latest film adaptation of the work of playwright August Wilson, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his original play version back in 1990.

Netflix is previewing The Piano Lesson, starring Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler. A hand-carved piano, passed through generations of the Charles family, is at the heart of this film based on the August Wilson play.

The Piano Lesson isn't as striking or form-shattering as its source material, alas. However, Malcolm Washington still delivers a solid directorial debut that especially excels regarding Danielle Deadwyler's performance.
