Threads, Meta’s answer to Elon Musk’s X, makes changes to incorporate features that have drawn millions to its much smaller rival.

Bluesky had about 6 million users in August. But since the Nov. 5 election, the new social media platform's popularity has exploded and the site now boasts some 20 million users.

The platform is described as "a social app that is designed to not be controlled by a single company." Essentially, Bluesky is a decentralized social media app. It has a similar look and feel as X, but has some different features to bring more people into its creation.

Bluesky is challenging Twitter, now known as X, which has been transformed into a very different beast by its Texas-based owner, billionaire Elon Musk.

While both platforms share some DNA with X (formerly Twitter), they've taken distinctly different paths in their evolution. Threads builds upon Instagram's established infrastructure and community, while Bluesky embraces an open-source, decentralized approach through its AT (Authenticated Transfer) Protocol.

Bluesky has seen usership soar in recent weeks as many people have moved off Twitter. which increasingly reflects the politics of Elon Musk.
