Running the classic Doom is a rite of passage for anything that has circuitry these days. When the Nintendo Alarmo released, some pondered when someone would get Doom running on it, and that has now happened.

What do John Deere tractors, Ikea smart bulbs, Lego bricks, and the MacBook Pro Touch Bar have in common? They can all run Doom, and naturally, so can Nintendo’s adorable Alarmo alarm clock. It was only a matter of time before someone pulled that off, but what I didn’t expect was that when it happened, it would be playable.

Nintendo Alarmo is a pricey item for fans of the big N, but its motion-activated alarm feature and design will make it appealing to kids.

Obviously, the Alarmo isn't the ideal or optimal way to play Doom (we've got an exceptional recently released Nightdive Studios-led remaster for that), but that isn't the point. Getting Doom to run on things it has no business running on has been a decades-long endeavor.

It started with GaryOderNichts figuring out how to run custom code at all on the Alarmo, a process which the enthusiast outlined on his blog and demonstrated by making the device display a picture of a cat. This naturally led GaryOderNichts' followers to request a Doom demonstration, which he provided just a few days later on November 2.

"There's currently no audio support. To avoid the USB loader memory size restrictions, the .wad needs to be compressed and then uncompressed to external memory on boot. However, it's possible to load the shareware version of Doom entirely from USB, without modifying the Alarmo."

Nintendo's Alarmo alarm clock was hacked and made to run the shareware version of Doom by Twitter user GaryOderNichts, who uploaded a gameplay video of the completed job to a Twitter thread earlier this week.
