Schools in the Netherlands began a complete nationwide ban on mobile phones on Monday. Phones in secondary school classrooms have been forbidden since the beginning of the year, a measure that has now been extended to primary schools from the start of the new school year.

Research suggests it’s not just a good idea for kids to put their phones away while in class — they shouldn’t bring them to school at all.

This sentiment about cellphones in class has become popular among California leaders. In early August, Gov. Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond urged school districts across the state to ban cellphones in classrooms.
