This big square used to be famous for labor demonstrations. Perfect location as it was close to many sweatshops in the old factory buildings nearby. Now it is famous for a farmer's market and many … Full review by Thomas V

Or hit the green market when its open. Can't go wrong in the area. THere's even a breakfast cafe on the second floor near the Barnes and Nobles. For diner type food I like Joe Juniors on 16th and Third. But if you want high end stuff eat at the restaurants on the West side of Union Sq.

I personally think Union Square is too far from the Freedom Tower and 911 to walk to. Central Park is even further away. In either case you'll be most likely using the subway or taxi. Central Park is close to the Museum mile (Met, Moma, Frick, Natural History) and Columbus Circle. Union Square is closer to Greenwich Village, Soho, China Town, Empire State Building, Highline. Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and Broadway are in between the two locations you mentioned. As far as restaurants go, regardless of where you stay, there's an overabundance of places to eat in any price range.
